A lot of people don't realise this, but the Amazon-branded delivery vans on the road every day aren't run by Amazon itself. They're operated by independent local businesses through what's called the Delivery Service Partner programme, each one running a fleet of Amazon-liveried vans, typically somewhere in the range of twenty to forty, with their own drivers and their own operating costs. It's worth understanding, because it changes who's actually responsible for keeping those tyres road-legal, and it's directly relevant to fleet operators right here in Dundee.
There's an Amazon delivery station on our doorstep
Amazon operates a delivery station on Riverside Avenue in Dundee, a short distance from our own base. Vans working out of a station like that are doing exactly the kind of driving that's hardest on tyres, constant stops and starts, tight manoeuvring into driveways and loading areas, and a full day of mileage covering a set patch of streets, the same pattern that wears down any multi-drop delivery fleet, just concentrated into one of the more visible fleet types on the road.
Who actually pays for the tyres
This is where it gets specific to how the programme works. Some delivery service partners lease their vans, and for leased vehicles, routine maintenance including tyres is often bundled into that lease arrangement. Others own their vans outright, and for those, tyre wear and tear is the operator's own cost to manage, the same as it would be for any other van-based business. Even where routine maintenance is bundled, damage from kerbs, punctures, or something that happens mid-round usually isn't something a scheduled maintenance plan covers, it's still the operator's problem to sort quickly.
Why downtime matters more here, not less
Delivery work runs to a tight daily schedule. A route planned for a full day of drops doesn't have slack built in for a van being off the road, and a vehicle stuck waiting for a tyre isn't just costing that vehicle's time, it's costing every delivery still on its route that day. Operators running under any kind of performance tracking feel that pressure even more directly. None of this is unique to Amazon-branded vans specifically, it's true of any tightly scheduled delivery operation, but the scale and structure of the programme means there are a lot of these fleets running exactly this kind of route across the country, including through Dundee and the surrounding area.
Electric vans add another layer
Part of Amazon's UK delivery fleet is now electric, running the Mercedes eSprinter alongside diesel vans. Electric vans carry a heavy battery pack low in the chassis and deliver full torque from a standstill, both of which put more load through the tyres than an equivalent diesel van doing the same round. The short version for a fleet operator is that electric delivery vans need the correct load-rated tyres and careful balancing, not just whatever's cheapest in the right size, or the wear shows up faster than expected.
What a sensible arrangement looks like
For an operator running a fleet like this, the two things that actually matter are speed when something goes wrong, and catching problems before they cause a breakdown at all. A scheduled check across the fleet, done in one visit rather than reacting vehicle by vehicle, catches wear and kerb damage before it turns into a van stuck mid-round. And when something can't wait for the next scheduled visit, a fast local response beats queuing at a depot or waiting on a national call centre to dispatch someone from further afield.
